Drop-In Adult Tutoring Starts Feb. 1; Tutor Training Available

Project READ to hold sessions for adults in basic reading, math, ESL, at area sites

Area adults needing help with basic reading, math, or English as a Second Language (ESL) skills can take part in free drop-in sessions around town starting Feb. 1.
Project READ will hold drop-in adult tutoring sessions weekly at four locations around Champaign and Urbana:Project READ tutoring
  • Urbana Free Library (Mondays 9:30–11:30 a.m.)
  • Parkland College Center for Community Engagement, Room C134 (Wednesdays noon–2 p.m.)
  • Wesley Food Pantry, 1203 W. Green St., Urbana (Thursdays 5–7 p.m.)
  • Champaign Public Library (Fridays 9:30–11:30 a.m.)
For now, the group invites community members to train as tutors for volunteering at these drop-in sites. Free Project READ "Intro to Tutoring" sessions will be held at the following times and locations:
  • Jan. 17, noon– 2 p.m. at Parkland's Center for Community Engagement
  • Jan. 18, 5:30–7:30 p.m. at Wesley Food Pantry
  • Jan. 19, 9:30–11:30 a.m. at Champaign Public Library
  • Jan. 20, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. at Parkland College Adult Education (Building E)
  • Jan. 22, 9:30–11:30 a.m. at Urbana Free Library

Funded by the Illinois State Library, Project READ adult literacy tutors provide free basic literacy, basic math, or ESL services to adults in a public community setting (like the library) or in an adult education classroom. The Project READ office is generally open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to noon, evenings by appointment, and Saturdays when volunteer training is scheduled.
