Parkland College's student-run campus news publication,
Prospectus News, recently won first-place regional awards for outstanding collegiate journalism from the Society of Professional Journalists.
Prospectus News won the 2011 Mark of Excellence Award for Region 5 as well as the award for Best Affiliated Web Site, 2 Year/Community College Division. SPJ's Region 5 covers Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. First-place regional winners move on to national competition; winners at the national level will be announced at the society's annual conference in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in September.
The Society of Professional Journalists, founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, is is "dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty," according to its website. It seeks to foster excellence among journalists as well as inspire younger generations to become journalists.
