New online map eases campus navigation

Find a room, office easier with interactive map, QR codes

Tuesday, August 23, 2011
Locating a class or office at Parkland College just got a bit easier.

The community college has launched an interactive online map, located at online.parkland.edu/maps, which will allow users to “move” from various locations at Parkland without stepping foot on campus. The new map permits searches that highlight specific areas (Parkland Art Gallery, Admissions Office, etc.) or room numbers within the main campus facility. Users can also get directions from one area or room to another; a route with beginning and ending points is marked out on the map once a request is made.

Plans include adding parking lots and other campus and off-campus buildings to the map, as development of this web application progresses.

To make the new map more accessible, quick response codes, also known as QR codes, are being posted along entrances to the college’s buildings this summer. These barcodes will allow smartphone users to instantly load the map to their phones for use inside Parkland.

The online map, generated through the Parkland Distance and Virtual Learning department, is based on mapping data from several sources, including Google Map, Champaign County GIS Consortium, and GeoEye.
