World of Science: Elements, Molecules, Reactions

Fri, Nov 03, 2017 starting at 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Science author and app creator to give talk on chemical reaction concepts

Science author Theo Gray will be the next speaker in the World of Science lecture series at the William M. Staerkel Planetarium at Parkland College.

His presentation, "Elements, Molecules, and Reactions," will be held Friday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. Admission is $2 at the door with Friends of the Staerkel Planetarium admitted free of charge.

Gray is the author of The Elements: A Visual Exploration of Every Known Atom in the Universe; Molecules: The Elements and the Architecture of EverythingTheodore Gray's Completely Mad Science: Experiments You Can Do At Home, But Probably Shouldn't; and most recently Reactions: An Illustrated Exploration of Elements, Molecules, and Change in the Universe. He is the creator of the bestselling iPad apps "Elements" and "Molecules," which have both been named "App of the Week" by Apple and have been featured in commercials and print advertisement for the iPad. Gray lives in Urbana.

His talk will roughly coincide with the release of his new book. With Reactions, Gray continues the journey through our molecular and chemical world that began with the tour de force The Elements and continued with Molecules. His work demonstrates how molecules interact in ways that are essential to our very existence. Reactions takes us through important concepts that characterize a chemical reaction, including energy, entropy, and time, all the while bringing us to understand the importance of these concepts and the power and magic of scientific exploration.

Following the presentation, the planetarium will premiere a brand new show on the mystery of dark matter titled Phantom of the Universe. Tickets for regular planetarium programs range from $5 to $6. For a full schedule of events, call the show hotline at 217/351-2446 or visit www.parkland.edu/planetarium.
