Study and Travel in Senegal, West Africa
Learn about the culture and sociopolitical issues of sub-Saharan
Africa, particularly those of Senegal, one of the most stable countries
in West Africa, through this popular Study Abroad. You'll examine the current status of sub-Saharan African
globalization, enjoying exposure to its rural traditional cultures
while observing the ongoing changes in its urban areas triggered by the
global youth culture (conveyed through rap music, cinema, and the
Internet). Draw
firsthand experiences, from field trips and living with host
families to guided learning in aspects of African culture such as guest
lectures, guided field trips, and dance sessions, to name a few.
While in the region, you'll have the opportunity to gain familiarity
with the Wolof language and with a variety of issues pertaining to
sub-Saharan Africa, from culture to politics to religion. You have
the option of staying either with a host family or in student housing
in the capital city of Dakar, Senegal. Participate in
cultural activities and visit several important historical, cultural,
and religious sites and museums across the country through guided field
trips to Gorée, Touba, Saint-Louis, and other locations.
