Men's Soccer team bounced from Region 24 Tournament

It was a tail of two halves on Saturday as Lincoln College held on for a 2-1 victory over Parkland in the Region 24 Quarterfinals. The win advances the Lynx (9-6-2) into a semi-final match-up on Wednesday at Lincoln Land while the Cobras end their season at (9-7-2).

Lincoln dominated the first half with an aggressive fast paced attack which resulted in a 2-0 halftime lead. The Cobras made several tactical adjustments at the break and controlled much of the second half. Luis Tavares scored off an assist from Ricardo Vega midway thru the half to cut the lead to one but could not connect on another goal despite several shots that either deflected off the post or hit the side of the net.

Men fall...wrap up Region tournament seeds

The Parkland men turned in a disappointing performance against MWAC opponent Heartland suffering their most lopsided loss of the season falling to the Hawks 4-1. Heartland's forwards created all sorts of problems for Parkland scoring 4 unanswered goals. NJCAA scoring leader and Player of the Week Javier Torres scored twice while Matt McClure and Phil Hamilton also scored. TK Keys salvaged a late goal for the Cobras.

The loss drops Parkland to 8-6-2 (3-3-1 in the MWAC Conference) and raises Heartland to 11-2-1 (4-1-1). Parkland has eight days to regroup before playing their last regular season game against Olivet Nazarene's JV on October 15. The loss means Parkland will be the #4 seed in the upcoming Region 24 Tournament that starts on October 21st. PC will get a first round bye and host the #5 seed on Saturday October 24th at 12:00.

COBRAS WIN IMPORTANT REGION 24 MATCH 3-1 VS REND LAKE

Rend Lake's top gun Thad Snell scored first but Parkland answered in big fashion with three goals of their own. TJ Keys, Alex Birnie and Kwesi Williams all scored for the Cobras as PC pulled away for the win. Sean Finn had two assists. Outside of the first 20 minutes Parkland controlled the field from endline to endline out shooting Rend lake 16-5 and earning a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The game raises Parkland's record to 8-5-2 while Rend Lake drops to 7-6-1. The victory sets up a M-WAC showdown with Heartland CC on Wednesday. The winner of the game will be the #3 seed in the Region 24 Tourney while the loser will be the #4. The Hawks enter the contest with a record of (10-2-1 3-1-1) a half game ahead of the Cobras in the standings.

PARKLAND AND LINCOLN TIE 1-1 IN CONFERENCE ACTION

The Cobras's journey to Lincoln ended up with a tie 1-1. Neither team was able to dent the back of the net until Parkland's Kenny Kranz's volley just before the half. Steven Salinus equalized for Lincoln mid way through the second half. Both teams saw chances late in the game but neither was able to find the winner.

The result puts Parklands record at 7-4-2 (conference 3-2-1) and Lincoln at 5-5-1 (conference 1-3-1). Next up for the Cobras is South Suburban College on Saturday.

COBRAS OUTLAST SWIC AND TWO  LIGHTNING DELAYS IN 2-1 WIN

After an even 1st half and a 30 minute lightning delay Parkland again showed their ability to make halftime adjustments and came out flying in the 2nd half. After multiple chances TJ Keys was brought down in the box. Kenny Kranz calmly knocked home the resulting penalty kick. Just minutes later more lightning struck and the two teams waited another 60 minutes before getting back on the pitch.
Parkland wasted little time with Matt Larison blasting home a long range laser. The Cobras had another goal called back just minutes later on a borderline offsides decision. Ajdic Dedic closed the gap for SWIC with 12 minutes left in the game but despite a late charge Parkland held on for the win. . Bosko Kovacevic was superb in goal against SWIC's many high balls into the box. The win, the Cobras 6th straight, raises Parkland to 7-4-1 and drops SWIC to 8-5-1. PC will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Lincoln for a key M-WAC match-up.

Three second half goals lead Men's Soccer to 4th straight win

Three goals over a period of 9 minutes in the second half helped lead the Parkland Men's Soccer team to a 4-1 win over Region 24 foe Kaskaskia on Tuesday afternoon. The Cobras jumped on top in the opening three minutes as Luis Tavares scored an unassisted goal. PC dominated the remainder of the half but could not score again while Kaskaskia took advantage of a Parkland miscue to knot the score at 1 at the intermission.

Already struggling under a more aggressive PC attack, KC suffered a major blow when one of their top players, Cecil Rowe, received his second yellow card of the match and was sent off. From there PC took command as Sean Finn (on an assist from Alex Birnie), Kenny Kranz from Stephen Grace, and Birnie from TJ Keys all scored goals as PC pulled away for the victory. Parkland out shot the visitors 12-2 for the contest as Spencer Bolen earned the victory in goal for PC.

The win improves PC to (5-4-1) while Kaskaskia falls to (1-8-1). Next up for the Cobras is a Thursday non-conference road contest at Kankakee.

Men’s Soccer team post shutout

The Parkland Men's Soccer team picked up their second straight shutout win as they dominated Danville Area Community College 4-0 on Tuesday night in an M-WAC contest. Parkland held DACC to just one shot on goal while PC was very efficient making four shots on 10 attempts. Alex Birnie paced the Cobras with two goals, the first coming just seven minutes into the match. TJ Keys and Luis Tavares also both scored while Kenny Kranz, Dane Murphy, and Tim Parks all had assists.

The win moves Parkland to (3-4-1 2-2) while DACC falls to (1-3-1 0-3). Next up for PC will be a Thursday afternoon M-WAC contest against Lewis and Clark (2-0-3 0-0-1). That match is set to begin at 4:00 at Parkland.

Men's Soccer falls to LLCC

At halftime it was confusing to look at the scoreboard. For the first 45 minutes Parkland outplayed Lincoln Land College, had more shots, more corners, hit the post. And yet Parkland found itself down 0-2 as Lincoln Land did what Parkland couldn't--convert on its chances. Dominic Ivens converted two crosses into two header goals. In the second half a penalty kick gave Lincoln Land another cushion and the game ended with Lincoln Land winning 3-0. PC will travel to Belleville Saturday to take on Lindenwood-Belleville.

Parkland finds offense, earns first win of season

Parkland scored early and often in the first half of their game against Springfield, jumping out to quick 5-0 lead before taking their foot off the gas. Former Centennial player Kenny Kranz had two goals. Former Central player Ricardo Vega had a goal and two assists. TJ Keys and Luis Taveras also recorded goals for the Cobras. Urbana HS product Spencer Bolen recorded the Parkland shutout.

The victory comes on the heels of a tough weekend at the Missouri Invitational where the Cobras went 0-2-1. Parkland was in every contest but scored just two total goals in the three games. PC lost to Kansas City CC 1-0 on Thursday before earning a 1-1 tie with Morton College on Friday as Victor Martinez scored the Cobras lone goal, his first of the season. On Sunday PC battled nationally ranked Jefferson College to the end but lost 2-1 despite a goal by TJ Keys.

Today's win raises Parkland's record to 1-3-1, and 1-1 in the MWAC Conference while Springfield is now 0-3-1. Next up for PC is a Thursday afternoon showdown with M-WAC leading Lincoln Land. The Loggers stand 5-0 on the season following a 2-1 victory over Lincoln College today.

Cobras drop another close one

Parkland played Kansas City Kansas Community College close but ended up losing 1-0. The game was the first game of the weekend for Parkland in the Missouri Junior College Invitational. A prestigious tournament featuring nationally ranked teams from around the country. Both teams squandered chances in the first half. KCKCC finally found the mark in the second half when Reon Thomas found Andre Braitwaite alone at the top of the eighteen. Men's Soccer hope to build on success of 2008

The Parkland Men's Soccer team hopes to build on the success of an M-WAC Championship, Region 24 title game appearance, and a school record 17 wins as they get the 2009 campaign underway on Sunday when they host arch-rival Illinois Central College starting at 3:00. The last time those two met, the Cobras stunned the Cougars winning a penalty kick shootout in the Region 24 Tournament that ended ICC's three-year run as Region champs.

Coach Mark Sikora's Cobras lost many of their stand outs from last season but this year's unit could be one of his deepest yet with 12 sophomores and 12 freshman making up the 24-man roster. Parkland is ranked #17 in the pre-season poll but should be tested early by the likes of ICC, #4 Jefferson, and #18 Lincoln Land during the early part of the schedule.

The team has a heavy local flavor with 6 graduates from Urbana HS, 3 from Centennial, and 1 from Central. Spencer Bolen, Stephen Grace, Richard Kayede, Miguel Manero, Tim Parks, and Isaac Leake come to PC via Urbana, Victor Martinez, Neil Hamilton, and Kenny Kranz from Centennial, and Ricardo Vega from Champaign Central. A fourth Centennial graduate, Il Sa Moon, is out for the season after breaking his leg during the pre-season.

Seven other members of the roster hail from the Springfield area including three from Rochester HS and a pair from Springfield. The team also has an international flare with one player each from Serbia, England, Brazil, Canada, and the Ivory Coast.
