Freshman Willy Wilner handled the tough windy conditions at the JUCO State Tourney firing a 74 to finish one stroke off the lead after Day 1 at Piper Glen Golf Course in Springfield. No other PC golfer could break 80 as the Cobras find themselves in 6th place after the opening day but just two strokes out of 3rd place headed into Monday's final round. Weather conditions today are expected to be even more difficult on the course with cooler temps and windier conditions.

Golf opens with busy weekend in Southern Illinois

The Parkland Golf team will see plenty of action this weekend as they will play 72 holes in two different tournaments. On Friday, the Cobras take part in the one-day 72-hole Rend Lake Fall Preview and after a day off will be in Marion for the two-day John A Logan Invite.

The Cobras should see plenty of top competition as the defending National Champions from Logan will be there as well as Rend Lake, Mississippi Gulf Coast, Shawnee, and several other top JUCO programs.

For the first time in two seasons the Cobras will not be lead by two-time All-American Michael Davan. The co-Male Athlete of the Year for the past two years is now playing at IUPUI and the Cobras also will be without fellow graduates Kevin Mast, Bob Huey, and Trevor Wiesner off last years team that won the M-WAC title and placed 8th in the Nation.

This fall, the Cobras will be lead by a trio of local products. Sophomore Corbin Sebens (Monticello HS) came on strong last spring and emerged as one of the Cobras top threats. He will be joined by Centennial graduate and Toledo University transfer Joe Smith and Willy Wilner (Judah Christian). Wilner was impressive earlier this week, carding back to back 73's at Iron Horse in Tuscola during qualifying for this week's events.

Joining them this weekend will be Michael Peters (Champaign Central), Drew Meiner (Normal West) and Matt Schopp (LeRoy). Two more local players Sam Wells (St. Thomas More) and Bryan Ideus (Rantoul) are also expected to be big contributors along with Ross Leary (Normal West) and Jake Wagner (Lafayette Jefferson HS).

Zach McNabney's Cobras will be in six events this fall while the bulk of their play and tournament qualifying takes place in the spring.
