Wittgren becomes 6th Cobra Player to Commit to D-1 Program
Wittgren will join current Cobra, Kevin Kiermaier, at Purdue next season.
Three more Cobra Baseball Players Commit to D-1 Programs
Three more members of the Parkland College Baseball team have made commitments to NCAA D-1 programs. Right handed hurler Danny Winkler will play at Central Florida, while lefty pitcher Darin Worman and first baseman TJ McManus will both continue their careers at Eastern Illinois. They join fellow Cobras Kevin Kiermaier (Purdue) and Bob Glover (University of Dayton) who committed earlier this month.
Winkler, a 6'2 RHP from Effingham St. Anthony, will play for the Golden Knights of Central Florida. UCF is located in Orlando and is a member of Conference-USA. Danny was 4-0 for the Cobras last season while holding opponents to a .187 batting average. He struck out 29 hitters in 22 innings of work.
Pair of Parkland Outfielders Committ to D-1 Programs
World Series MVP Kevin Kiermaier (top) and fellow Cobra outfielder Bob Glover (bottom) have verbally committed to D-1 programs for the 2010-2011 school year. Kiermaier will continue his baseball career at Purdue University, a member of the Big 10 Conference while Glover will attend the University of Dayton, a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Kiermaier burst onto the Cobra baseball scene last season as the catalyst for a potent offense. Kiermaier hit .460, scored 84 runs and stole 23 bases. Kiermaier also set a school record for triples in a season (13) and also tied the school record for home runs in a season (13). In addition to World Series MVP honor, Kiermaier was named the M-WAC Freshman of the Year, 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-Region, and was a 3rd Team NJCAA All-American.
Glover played a key part in the Cobras run to the National Title last year. Glover, who made starts at both 1B and in the OF, hit .348 with 15 doubles, 2 triples and 5 homeruns while driving in 42 runs. Glover also is a threat on the bases swiping 20 of 22 bases last season. Glover may most be remember for his walk-off home run versus Heartland in the Region 24 championship game which propelled the Cobras into the D-II World Series.
Both players, who are natives of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, are expected to play key roles in the Cobras drive to repeat as National Champions. Several other players including pitchers Dan Winkler and Darin Worman hope to finalize their future college plans later this semester.

Cobras Earn All-American Honors
Three Parkland College baseball players were recognized by NJCAA Baseball by being named All-Americans at the conclusion of the 2009 season, which saw the Cobras claim the NJCAA Division 2 World Series Championship.
Max Friedman, a right handed pitcher from Chicago, IL, was selected as a 2nd Team All-American as he went 11-0 for the Cobras. Friedman pitched 80 1/3 innings this past spring while striking out 87 and posting a 3.13 E.R.A. Friedman will attend Wright State University in Dayton, OH this upcoming fall on a baseball scholarship.
Nate Roberts, an outfielder from Spring Grove, IL, was also selected as a 2nd Team All-American as the Designated Hitter. Roberts set a school record by hitting .515 this past season while collecting 18 doubles, 10 homeruns and driving in 64 runs. Roberts also led the Cobras in stolen bases with 29. Roberts will attend High Point University in North Carolina in the fall on a baseball scholarship.
Kevin Kiermaier, an outfielder from Fort Wayne, IN, was named a 3rd Team All-American after a stellar freshman season for the Cobras. As the Cobras leadoff man, Kiermaier had an on-base percentage of .545 while hitting for an average of .436. Kiermaier set a school record for triples in a season (13) and tied the school record for homeruns in a season (13) while also hitting 10 doubles, stealing 23 bases and scoring a team best 84 runs.
"All three of these guys are well deserving of these accolades. Max was unbelievable for us on the mound all year and I was happy to see his hard work in the off-season pay off. Nate and Kevin were great for us all year. These are two of the most consistent hitters I've ever had. Both play the game the right way and don't try to do too much at the plate. They do what is needed and asked and its exciting to see them be rewarded for all their hard work." states Head Coach Matt Kennedy.
Cobras Roberts Selected by Rays in MLB Draft
Cobra outfield, Nate Roberts, was selected in the 48th round by the Tampa Bay Rays in the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft this past June.
Roberts posted a school record .515 average to go along with his 18 doubles, 10 homeruns, 64 RBI's and also collected a team best 29 stolen bases. Roberts helped lead the Cobras to their second NJCAA National Title this past season by hitting an amazing .710 in the postseason, before being selected an NJCAA 2nd Team All-American.
Roberts will attend High Point University in High Point, North Carolina on a baseball scholarship this upcoming fall.
